Apple Unveils Its Latest Internetworking Router
New technology allows AppleTalk network users to easily connect local
and remote workgroups together
BOSTON, Massachusetts--January 12, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced a family of internetworking router software products
enabling organizations to easily increase the size, performance and
manageability of their AppleTalk networks.
The Apple Internet Router product family provides wide-area
networking (WAN) connectivity by implementing a new technology--
called the AppleTalk Update-based Routing Protocol (AURP)--which
significantly reduces network traffic. Additionally, the new router
software provides enhanced local area networking (LAN) support,
routing data between industry standard LocalTalk, Ethernet, Token-
Ring and other network types...

The program contained here does not seem to have made it into sumex, umich,

Try my small utility 'MacLPR 1.3'.
Enclose is CompactPro+BinHex file. It include Japanese ReadMe file.
If you have any questions, please send me.
Following are brief descriptions.
* To use, simply drag & drop your text file. Press option-key while
launching, the page setup dialog will be appeared.
* It treat text whose first 2 bytes are '%!' as postscript code,
otherwise as plane text.
* It uses PicComments to down-load postscript code, so you should not
send code which include some operator like 'exitserver' or
'initgraphics'... (see tech note #91).
I think almost all postscript codes of PICTURE are OK.
I have distributed MacLPR trough fj.binaries.mac newsgroup since May '92.
It has not been tested on System 7.1, yet. I'm using 7.0 and 6.07.

This version adds many new features, such as the ability to change the
text font and size in the verse fields. Much better online help for

For those who are not familiar with The Bible Promise Stack, it is a

Subject: After Dark
I have a couple of weird problems that I hope one of the kind Info-Mac
readers might be able to shed some light upon.
I have a rather odd setup, with two monitors. The primary is a standard
Apple 13" and the secondary is an NEC MultiSync 5FG. Because I didn't like
the way some modules dealt with two monitors, After Dark is set up with
MultiModule to run a different module on each screen. The NEC runs GraphStat,
and I never have any problems. The Apple monitor runs Randomizer, which is
where I get the occasional foulups.
The problems seem to take two forms. First, when Randomizer happens to
choose one particular module (Sparkler), I get
Randomizer: Sorry. Sparkler ran out of memory.
Also, at random times, which perhaps is one particular module, but not that
I have had the time to isolate, I get
Randomizer: MultiModule: Something went wrong.
To complete the information, this is a Mac IIci with 20MB RAM, System 7.0.1
Tuned, After Dark 2.0w, and a whole boatload of inits, cdevs, etc.
Anyone have any ideas?

Subject: Apple 16# Monitor Distortion
Hi there folks:
We have been having a problem with Apple 16 inch Color Monitors, and
are
wondering if anyone else has had the same experience, and better yet, knows
causes or solutions. We just acquired several of these monitors, driven the
Apple endorsed E-machines DoubleColor 8 bit video card.
When The screen has a long (most of the screen width) line of text in
an application such as TeachText or Word, there is significant distortion
toward the right side of the monitor, which could be described as "becoming
wavy". That is to say that vertical lines, such as the edges of the text
window, becomes wiggly, as does the text itself.
We have found that the problem occurs with Mac CI, and VX, but does
not seem to occur with Mac CX.
Have any other people experienced this problem?

Subject: Appleworks files
Re>Appleworks files
Here is a summary of the information I have received.
1. Mounters: There is a ProDOS mounter that is part of the Apple ][e
card software for the LCII. One respondant sent me a copy with the
warning that it cannot be used with any DOS mounter. This is correct.
Unfortunately, at least on my fx, this mounter is rather quirky. It
mounts a ProDOS disk and the files show up on the desktop, but not in
any application, even with the "all files" option checked. A file can
be finder copied to a Mac directory where it can be accessed by Mac
applications. Any attempt to finder copy in the reverse direction
results in an error of type -37 and failure. I also experienced
crashes after a while with this extension active, though I cannot
prove it is responsible. I do run a ton of extensions, though I turned off
all the DOS related ones first. BTW, one respondant said: "Cherche pour le
software pour la ][e card pour le MacLC a ftp.apple.com" I was unable
to find it there (I checked, even though someone else had already sent
it to me.)
2. Translators: There is an AFE Works/Works translator from Microsoft that
is apparently free. (Two people sent me this, one with a much earlier
version of AFE than I already had.) However, it has a file size limitation
due to a bug, and truncates beyond that, thus limiting its usefulness.
Thus, two-steps
appeas necessary to transfer files to the Mac from a ProDOS disk. (a)
use AFE to move the file into a mac format (where it has the creator A1
and type pdos) (b) use a Claris type translator (DataViz) to produce a
NISUS or Word file to get the formatting.
My questions remain:
Is there a working ProDOS mounter? Does this one work any more
cleanly on an LC? Is there a cleaner way to do the file translation
that does not use a two step process? Will my friend be happy with an
LC/][e card combo, or stuck with a lot of fiddle-faddle? (These
questions have never come up here at Trinity Western University
because we have made a clean break from the ][ line -- a good thing
now that Apple has announced "forever" terminated on Monday.

Subject: AutoDoubler woes.
Has anyone else had problems with AutoDoubler (version 2.0)?
I find that with AutoDoubler and CopyDoubler installed GateKeeper
(v1.2.6) now gives (apparently erroneous) messages about suspicious
"Res(self)" modification attempts made by numerous extensions during
startup, and by some programs (e.g. Kermit, SuperPaint) when they start
up.
I can eliminate the extensions' res(self) messages by making AutoDoubler
and CopyDoubler load last. (But neither AutoDoubler nor CopyDoubler
seem to like to be renamed [I get "unimplemented trap" errors if I do],
so I had to move them both into the System folder.) And I can avoid the
res(self) messages generated by the programs by just granting them
privileges in GateKeeper. But both these solutions seem unsatisfactory.
The extensions are not compressed by AutoDoubler since they are in the
System folder, and neither program is compressed by AD ... so why the
complaints?
I have tried various things (such as rebuilding the desktop and reinstalling
AutoDoubler) without success. I have also emailed Fith Generation
Systems without response.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Does anyone have any suggestions as
to any better way to get around it? (This is running on an LC with
System 7.0 and Tuner 1.1.1).
Thanks,
Philip Sharman. (phsst1@vms.cis.pitt.edu, phsst1@pittvms.bitnet)

and ease of use are two other factors, although reliability is more
important.
Also, if there are other alternatives that I'm forgetting, I'd be interested
as well. We'd like to back up the whole drive on one [tape, disk, etc.],
although two would work as well. Thanks in advance, and I'll post a summary

I created a Hungarian Times once with Fontographer and I'm not sure
what you mean by not "quite as clear as" regular Times. There is a
method which allows you to create a font which is based on another
font, which keeps all the characters you have not changed. Did you
miss this feature or do you mean that the Romanian-specific stuff
is not clear?

First off, you would get the Romanian System from Apple. Get a hold
of the DEVELOP CD, that probably has a copy on it. Also, that may not
solve your problem. The Hungarian System 6.0.7 did not have the Hungarian-
specific characters on it, but I have not looked at the System 7 version.
Sounds like you're back to figuring out how to make a acceptable font
with Fontographer. Let me know how it works out.-Pete Tamas

Tim,
I purchased CG 1.0 when it was released, knew people at Cricket, and was in
contact with various product managers over time (including at CA). When CA
purchased the product (maybe four years ago?) they did no development work.
The product just sat until recently leaving the owners to fend for themselves
with incompatability problems and a VERY limited feature set. Kaleidagraph is
a very very good product that has a much larger function set over even the
(long overdue) new version of the product. I'm not flaming at you, but the
company has a horrible track record with the product. I wouldn't recommend
that anyone invest in their product when there are so many others out there
that do a better job, and have great record for support. Examples include
Kaleidagraph, DeltaGraph (and DeltaGraph Pro), SieraPlot (for certain vertical
applications it is one of the best).

My own StyleWriter has

evidence to the contrary, is that the claim is FALSE and that StyleWriters,
in spite of their flimsy appearance, last just as long (or short) as
any other piece of plastic.
I sure hope so, as I am on my sixth ream of paper since

This problem turned into an ugly discussion on the mail system here in
Cleveland (Freenet). Eudora was supported (and given to users) by the
operators, then when forged mail came into play, they pulled access to
the POP server to be read only. (It's not to much fun to read mail then
respond this way)
Is there a way the POP server could be fixed so that remote users
would have to enter a PW to send a message, just as they do to read it?
Online users have to enter their PW wether or they are just reading or
sending, it doesn't seem like the system was designed with the remote
user in mind.
There were some alternatives discussed (I was kind of lost in trying
to follow what they were though)

Gotcha, Murph. (A rare event, indeed; Murph's been very helpful to me and
many others and only my own innate cruelty causes me to continue.) POP3
servers are pretty secure; they require a password for access as well as an
existing account; they're used by Eudora to pick up mail. The problem lies
with SENDING mail, which is not handled by a POP3 server but by an SMTP
server, which requires neither an account nor a password. Any SMTP server
is delighted to send mail anywhere for anyone that contacts it from
anywhere on the net, and does not check return addresses to see if they
even exist before transmitting mail.

WorldScript II, the Kotoeri (the Japanese input system), the
Kyoto Truetype font, and the various control panels and resources
you need are available on the October and the Nov/Dec Developer
CD-ROM's. Installation is pretty simple, but you do need to
realize that the InputBackSupport extension (described as being
for backwkard compatibility with the old scheme of fonts) is
*not* optional.
Also, you can only use Japanese filenames if you make Japanese your
system script. Since each script seems to come with at least
a few files with that script system, and only can only have one
System Script, I'd say that this "world-ready" software isn't
quite ready for prime time. But the kotoeri input method is
certainly an improvement over KanjiTalk from a user-interface
standpoint. (I haven't used it enough yet to know whether its
dictionary and conversion algorithms are any better. It wouldn't
be hard, though; KanjiTalk's were pathetic.)
You'll want the SystemScriptSwitcher control panel, which is a lot
easier to deal with than changing scripts via ResEdit.

have run into a somewhat serious compatibility problem. Since I haven't been

would give Info-Mac a try.
The problem is that if I try to use my MacRecorder sound digitizer through the
sound manager (either with SoundEdit Pro or QuickTime) and have the cache
enabled, my machine slows to a crawl. For example, the menus take about 5
seconds to paint onto the screen. Using the MacRecorder directly to the modem
port works fine, and turning off the cache works fine. QuickTime performance,
however, is severely reduced without the cache enabled. (I ran the comparison
with sound turned off.)
Has anyone tried sound digitizing with either the LogiCache or Daystar's
PowerCache, and the cache enabled? Even if you don't have the MacRecorder,
have
you found any such incompatibilities using the internal sound input
capabilities of the newer machines?

Magnet, by No Hands Software, might be able to do this. Here is what the
MacWarehouse catalog says about Magnet:
" Using Magnet is as if you have a top-notch staff of personal assistants to
manage your files. Tell Magnet once what to do -- synchronize files between
your PowerBook and office Mac, backup important files, or continually search
across the network for the most recent copy of a shared file - and it will
follow your instructions flawlessly, on-time, forever.
Synchronizing files between your PowerBook and office Mac is as easy as
pointing at two folders. By utilizing powerful Agent technology, the
synchronization will occur from then on automatically - even periodically
from remote locations over the phone lines! Special features safeguard
against overwriting out of date data and out of sync clocks. It's core
search engine doubles as a multi-attribute find fine and file manager,
giving
you an outstanding value. Point and click interface makes automating all
file-related tasks a breeze.
Requires: System 7. Code: UTI 0313 Price: $89.00"
MacWarehouse's phone number is 1-800-255-6227, but in the interests of
impartiality, I should say you may be able to find it elsewhere.

Hiya programmers,
I do miss some system extension which makes scaling of windows possible...
Imagine this : One has multiple active programs, each in it's working window
environment. On a 19" screen all windows can be made visible, but suppose
one would wish to see all the active windows on a 9" screen ? Scaling of each
window into a icon or preferably into a settable percentage of it's original
would make this possible. Also it may be possible to scale windows into larger
proportions, as the apple extension easyview (?) does.. I wish I could
displace
one of the corners of a window to make it scalable, instead or reducing the
typing size of the active window ( that is e.g. pc 80x24 scaled smaller,
compared to 20x6 reduced area ).
I do know that an extension exits which implements something alike, but the
only thing this extension does is creating a title bar with the name of the
window and a settable white area under the title.
I am looking for something a la MacLayers : really neat!
Am i making the wish clear ?
I was told that OS/2 already implements this ( -:( for Macs, well a minor

The books (electronic texts) are in dir pub/etext?? where ?? is the year
the book was "published" in electronic form. Project Gutenberg
has set a goal of "publishing" 4 books a month this year. Check 'em

Never trust the WSJ, these are normal anonymous FTP sites, not databases.

Subject: QuickTime support for AIFF sound files
Hello again!
I read the post in v11 #7 about translating AIFF sound files using the
QuickTime player, and it looks like I can really put it to use. Here's my
question - once I have converted the sound into the QuickTime format (a
movie with no frames and just a soundtrack), is there a way I can convert this
to either a System 7 snd file, or to a SoundMover file? Or is there perhaps
a better way to handle AIFF sound file translation???
Thanks for your help!!!

Subject: Rasterops 364 Problem (Q)
I'm using a Rasterops 364 card with QuickTime 1.5 and Movie Recorder to
capture
movies. When I view the Monitor window, the bottom 3 or so rows of pixels are
not updated, remaining black, white or some other "noise" pattern. The
resulting movie alternates with each frame between gray and black or white on
the bottom rows. It sometimes also jumps up and down a pixel or so. It's as if
the board and the software are not agreeing on the size of the capture
window.
The same thing happens in other QuickTIme capture applications but, the desk
accessory for viewing TV is rock solid.
Any ideas? Rasterops is at a loss, and I am about to bring the board in to
have
it checked out. Please respond by E-Mail and I will summarize to the net.
Thanks in advance.

You can simply remove EITHER System or Finder from the System Folder.
Once I was able to get an anemic hard drive working again by NOT
removing the System software until AFTER the fresh system was installed.
My hypothesis (perhaps erroneous) was that the location on the hard drive
where the System software resided was imperfect.

Don't bother. Go straight to the following steps. (Do not pass Go, do
not collect $200).
> * reboot
> * run the System 7.1 install

Subject: Screensaver for two-screen systems (Q)
Fellow Mac-o-philes,
I remember a question on this subject around a month ago, but I never saw a
response. I have a Plus with a Mirror two-page monitor in addition to the
internal screen. Darkside will kick in and animate the main screen during a
period of inactivity and will blank the internal screen, as it should.
However,
I would also like a screensaver which would blank just the *internal* screen
when all of the action is occurring on the main screen. Does anyone know of
a screensaver with this capabilty? At this point, the best I can do is to
keep the brightness control on the internal screen pretty low. Thanks in
advance for any help.

Subject: SE/30 RAM speeds - correction
Brad Sandeman wrote yesterday about the SE to SE/30 upgrade and stated that
all the RAM in each SIMM bank must be the same speed.
I am pretty sure that that is incorrect: All the RAM in a SIMM bank must be
the same SIZE; all of the RAM in the whole computer must run at least as
fast as required by the manufacturer - after all, it is this speed that the
RAM will run at, no matter what it (the SIMM) is CAPABLE of.
(i.e. you could use 70 ns RAM in a Mac Plus, but it will run at 150 ns or
worse - in that machine).
It clearly follows from this that as long as each SIMM in your computer
can run at the right speed - or better - that you will be fine.

Subject: Search & replace for large text files (A)
In 11-8 Graham Allsopp wonders how to handle some postscript text
replacements on large files. Two suggestions:
1) Try Add/Strip 3.0.3 (info-mac/util/add-strip-303.hqx). It allows 150
replacement strings of up to 28 characters each. Large files are no
problem. It handles all replacements off-screen (displaying a progress
thermometer so you know it's operating) and works very, very fast in my
experience; has many other wonderful features too. By Jon Wind; $25
shareware.
2) Sometimes, alas, a bit of programming gets the job done directly better
and faster than any utility. Just about any language for the Mac will let
you write a simple routine to just read in text and write it out with a
replacement string. I use QuickBasic for this sort of thing, because it's
convenient and cheap.

Subject: Search & replace for large text files [A]
>I am currently converting a series of PostScript files from a mainframe for

What a coincidence. My answer to the problem about concatenating small text
files--buy and use MPW--appeared in the same info-mac digest as this
question.
Again, I recommend MPW. A simple text filter, like this, is not much more
than a simple search and replace and can be handled with a one-line command.
I can't write the appropriate line here as MPW uses the full, 8-bit, Apple
character set but a working paraphrase might look like this:
replace -c [inf] /([0-9]+.[0-9]+[ \t][0-9]+.[0-9]+)[option-r]1 m/ \
"[option-r]1 L\nS\nU\nu\n[option-r]1 m"
This is pretty standard use of regular expressions, even if it looks like
gibberish.
The MPW replace command is not blindingly fast--it might well take a couple
of minutes. MPW doesn't mind 1 Mbyte files at all. More complicated text
filters can be handled with more complex scripts, or with the StreamEdit
tool. For really complicated text filtering, I write small MPW tools in
C, compile and run them.
You could do this job with Alpha, available on info-mac, too.
Bottom line: for some of the traditional computer tasks that we sometimes
still have to do, you can't beat MPW. You will find, too, that Apple's
flavor of a command-line interface is innovative and is like no other.

If you have access to a mush-DOS machine, you might want to try the
shareware editor, Bingo. A year and a half ago I had a 26 Meg text file into
which I needed to insert 90,000 carriage returns so that Paradox could suck
it in.
At the time, Bingo also insisted on redrawing the screen after each replace
operation, significantly slowing the process. I did correspond with the
author, who said he was considering adding a switch to allow disabling
screen redraws.
If Archie doesn't come up with the file anywhere on the net, let me know.
I'm pretty sure I can dig up info from whatever version I used.
BTW, even though the screen redraws slowed things down, Bingo was blazingly
fast compared to anything I could come up with on the Mac.
